Gas engines — namely the LS variety — are the most dominant, but diesel engines are steadily gaining market share. One diesel engine in particular that pops up more than most is the 3. The 3. This is what makes it such a popular candidate for engine swaps.

Weighing in at nearly pounds, the robust inline four-cylinder engine is the little brother of the cherished 5. The fact that both the 3. Hitting the market inthe first 3. This means they can be found anywhere, and for really cheap.

In addition, since the engines require very few electronics to operate, it simplifies the conversion process. Diesel engines are notoriously large, and the family of B-series Cummins diesels are some of the longest and tallest. Both of these facts make them difficult to package. The 4BT measures out in inches with an overall length of The pre 4BT engines have eight valves and received power ratings of hp and lb-ft of torque.

Post units known as the 4BTA went to a valve configuration. With this valvetrain adjustment came a base horsepower bump to and a more impressive lb-ft of torque. Depending on the application, the power figures vary.

The earlier 4BT engines are still the easiest to come by — the most desirable equipped with the P mechanical injection pump, often referred to as the P-pump engine. These injection pumps are easier to modify and are thought to be more reliable over the later-style electric VP pumps. From a packaging front, this is helpful as intercooler ducting, as the intercooler itself can be challenging to fit under the hood. The trouble for those chasing more power is that an intercooler of some sort will need to be added.

With the weight of the engine being a third of Jeep Wrangler, the added mass up front can have a negative effect on the handling.

Catch Up on These Diesel Stories! The Cummins 5. Hands down, no argument. T by hoop fans worldwide, the "valve Cummins" is held in equally high regard by diesel enthusiasts everywhere. However, as Cummins diesels go, the 3. Based on the same inline-cylinder block logic as the 5.

The engine powered small equipment, buses, and the boxy step-type vans that are better known as "bread trucks," and init received an update to 16 valves that jacked performance to a more robust horses and lb-ft of torque.

If performance is a concern and with only hp it should bethe pre-'98 engine is the one to use, as its fueling is anchored by the vaunted p injection pump, which is easily modified to increase fuel volume and help a 4BT make more power. However, and sadly, both iterations of the I-4 turbodiesel are not intercooled, so a method for cooling the air charge, and addressing many other internal hard-part challenges have to be considered, if hopping up a 4BT is the plan.

Bottom line? Making really big steam will be expensive. Because of its very respectable torque output, the 3. Our intent with this report is simply to give the small-but-mighty Cummins 4BT turbodiesel a little shine by providing a little history about the engine, as well as a breakdown of its hard-core stats chart courtesy of cumminshub.

The 3. There are 3. The engine has cast iron engine block with engine bores machined directly into the engine block. All 4BT engine blocks are the same, and they have a different transmission adapter plate only depending upon the application. The engine valvetrain is OHV. A camshaft is mounted into the block and driven by crankshaft through gears in the front end of the engine as well as oil pump.

The camshaft opens and closes valves pushing through rocker arms by pushrods and solid tappets. The cylinder head is made of cast iron too. The intake and exhaust ports are on opposite sides crossflow cylinder head. There are eight valves, 2 per cylinder. The 4BT features the mechanical direct injection system. The early versions equipped with the P mechanical injection pump driven through a gear by camshaft's gear.

The 4BT engine has the turbocharger, but it is not-intercooled. Intercooled version named as the 4BTA, where letter A means "Aftercooled" has lower compression ratio Lower compression and cool air allow giving a higher boost.

The 4BTA engine produces more power and torque and is more suitable for installation in a small truck or pickup, but keep in mind what the 4BTA is an industrial engine. Automotive charge air cooled engines have different numbers depending upon model and year of production.

There is the industrial naturally aspirated version named as the 4B with The 4BT is very similar to the 6BT.

Cummins Diesel Engines Specification Sheets

It has the same architecture, and many parts are interchangeable. The pistons, injectors, connecting rods, valves, pushrods, and rocker arms are identical. The 4BT is a smaller displacement and shorter in length four-cylinder version of the 12 valve Cummins engine.

The 4BT is not inherently balanced like the six-cylinder 6BT engine, so it produces a lot of vibrations, and so smooth in operation compared to the 5. The 4B engines were commonly used in industrial equipment such as power units, drilling machines, big water pumps, wood chippers, etc. The B series engines require very few electronics, and they are cheap and straightforward to rebuild or repair. The P-pump engines are more comfortable to modify, and more reliable compare to modern electric VP pumps.

But the fact is the 4BT is old, massive diesel engine. It is noisy, shaky, smoky as an old diesel. The engine is quite difficult to install under a hood of a small vehicle due to large dimensions, it is tall and weight so much, also need a place for an intercooler and pipes.

It is not enough power for a full-size truck or SUV, at the same time its weight puts more strain on a front suspension and make an adverse effect on the handling of a small 4x4 vehicle. Home Cummins 4BT 3.

Since its introduction, three generations of the B series engine have been produced, offered in both inline-four and inline-six configurations in multiple displacements. The B-series features engine bores machined directly into the block rather than the wet liners used on earlier Cummins engines.

It was also set apart by the use of a shallow one-piece head, requiring closer tolerances than in other Cummins products.

Every Cummins powered Dodge Pickup since initial production in has come equipped with a turbocharger. It uses a gear-drive camshaft for extra reliability. Also specified is a deep-skirt engine block and extra-strong connecting rods. A Holset turbocharger is used. The original B Series was updated with 24 valves and an electronic engine management system to become the ISB in The 3. Additionally it has seen broad usage in agricultural equipment. It has also gained popularity as an engine swap into smaller trucks.

Appearing in the — Dodge Ram pickup truck, it became a popular alternative to the large gasoline V8 engines normally used in full-size pickup trucks, since it produced the torque at low engine speeds, and significantly better fuel mileage. During that time, the Dodge Ram was the only diesel pickup that did not rely on glowplugs for cold weather starting.

Production : The 5. One unusual feature of the ISB is that it is a multi-valve pushrod engine design, with 4 valves per cylinder it is thus sometimes called the "valve" Cummins.

Most customers reuse those components as they rarely fail. Extended long block builds are run tested prior to shipment. Our extended long block assemblies include:. Cummins 4BT Engines are primarily used in industrial applications. Some Cummins 4BT engines are also in use in small boats and bilge pumps but mainly use in small off-highway equipment. The standard 4BT will produce lb-ft of torque at 1, rpm however common upgrades can increase the torque ratio to well over lb-ft of torque.

That is a lot of torque at the wheels; perfect for traversing steep inclines or hugging the edge of a trail. There is a whole community over at 4BTSwaps.In the off-road community engine swaps can be a touchy subject. Because of that, Chevrolet LS engines are pretty common, especially the truck version of the LS family. But, diesel engines, specifically the 4BT Cummins, are becoming increasingly popular. It can also be found in everything from SX drift cars to Mustang drag cars.

Before I tell you everything you need to know about this engine, I must first inform you of the absolute the basics of the 4BT. You can find even more 4BT information on Wikipedia. The 4BT shares most of its components with the 6BT, but with two cylinders missing. The pistons, injectors, connecting rods, and valvetrain design are straight off of the 12v Cummins. Out of the units listed above, weight is the most surprising. Horsepower may seem relatively low, especially for a 3.

The post version, 4BTA, had a significant power bump thanks to its jump from eight to sixteen valves. Thanks to its size, power output, and mechanical fuel injection system, the 4BT can be found in a plethora of different applications. These are large trucks which may have a relatively heavy payload, but have a tiny engine bay, making the 4BT the obvious choice. There is not any official list of 4BT applications, but bread trucks are definitely the most common application.

Modern applications have since moved on to newer and more efficient diesel engines including the R2. The 4BT is by no means a performance engine. As we said above it was used in applications such as bread trucks and the numbers show it. Of course, the 6BT is also very weak straight from the factory, but with some modifications to the fuel system and fuel timing, big power can easily be achieved.

The common 6BT fuel modifications apply to the 4BT, as they share the same fuel pump and injectors. If you want big horsepower, a turbocharger upgrade is a great place to start. An HX35, HE, or HE are great budget options which will flow significantly more air than the stock 4BT turbocharger at the cost of throttle response.

All 4BT applications lack an intercooler which is great for packaging constraints but terrible for power. An intercooler is a great way to pick up horsepower and improve power consistency by keeping charge air temperatures lower. As far as fueling is concerned, upgraded injectors are an excellent place to start, but are not necessary for small power increases. The P fuel injection pump is the same one found in the 6BT. You can also ground down or remove the fuel plate which is what controls the maximum fueling.

Fuel timing is crucial on the 4BT, so be sure to set it right, or you may have a blown engine on your hands. Past the basic fueling mods, aftermarket governor springs are a great way to pick up power. The OEM governor springs of the P pump limit the engine to 2,rpm with de-fueling starting at 2,rpm.

Aftermarket governor springs will allow full fueling up to 3,rpm or even 4,rpm depending on what spring kit you purchase.

It should be noted that the fueling modifications listed above apply only to 4BT engines with the Bosch P pump. Models with the later VE-pump require different modifications. The real reason you might want to swap a 4BT is for fuel mileage, and size constants.
